Just installed openSUSE: my thoughts!

Just installed openSUSE: my thoughts!

Let it be known that I am still new to Linux and trying out new things!

Im using KDE for the first time now guys. I really like what I see with open-SUSE 12.1. It looks the part and I never been more motivated to use Firefox as my default browser for some reason. In open-SUSE 12.1 Firefox seems perfect compared to the other distros I tried like Linux Mint 11 and Ubuntu 11.04. The only problem I have is getting use to how openSUSE deals with installing software. Its easy but not as easy as a Debian based distros. Also I dont understand why I can not create icons on my desktop. Well I could be they have to be inside that little plasma square that KDE provides on the desktop(Why I have no clue). Certain things like right clicking do not present options that you would expect in KED. I thing that KDE looks very modern but I find it harder to navigate then gome, gome 2.x that is since I have not tried gome 3.x yet. But I am torn because I really love the modern look of KDE, it almost reminds me of a mac but Im use to how gome functions in general and ! the applications associated with gnome. Should I stick with open-SUSE, or go back to Mint and just install gnome 3 since I am use to mint? Is there a good reason to stick with open-SUSE besides how damn sexy its KDE version looks?

Iptables config for wan:8888 to lan:80 on Amazon EC2

Iptables config for wan:8888 to lan:80 on Amazon EC2

Hello,

Right now i have configured 2 interfaces on my Amazon EC2 instance and i've opened 7999-8999 ports from web interface:

WAN Interface
Code:

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 12:31:38:04:C0:75
          inet addr:10.220.195.131  Bcast:10.220.195.255  Mask:255.255.254.0

VPN Interface
Code:

ham1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:23:C3:E1:07:8E
          inet addr:192.168.1.108  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

As far as i've read Amazon does NAT 1:1, converting my real ExternalIP into 10.220.195.131.

I can ping in internet and also in 192.168.1.1, and i'm interested how can i configure iptables in order to translate:

ExternalIP:8888 into 192.168.1.1:80

Please help me a bit cause i've tried different configurations and none of them worked until now.

For the start can you guys please tell me if i would need to use the ExternalIP in my iptables or 10.220.195.131 ?

Thanks a lot and happy holidays!

Strangest Problem Yet

Strangest Problem Yet

Ok, this is the strangest problem I have yet to encounter with Ubuntu.

My computer (running Ubuntu 11.10) is unable to use the Internet through either the Wireless LAN connection or the Ethernet connection. It will connect to the network in both instances, but thats about it. I am unable to access the internet. As soon as I connect this computer, the entire connection becomes unresponsive and I have to disconnect and re-start the router to restore the connection. All other devices connected to the router are unable to access the internet as soon as the Ubuntu computer is connected.

If I boot Ubuntu straight from the USB stick it is installed from, then all internet functions work just fine. Because of this, I have been able to rule out a hardware issue as the cause of the problem.

Sorry if this is a bit confusing. I'm trying my best to describe the situation. I may make a video this evening to help document the problem.

Thanks

SO, I've used linux exclusively since around 2005. my modem started dropping carrier last month, I finally got ahold of ATT. and we resolved the issue....for a few hours..I was using a Dlink modem, they said I should be using a ATT modem, so I dug mine out ( been sitting for 2 years) the modem works all lights come on, but I get re-directed to ATT, and it says " your internet account will not work with your current operating system" o.k isn't there some sort of law against a company forcing you to install windows ? This is the begining of the end of freedom of choice...any one else run into this ?

Unresponsive server. Hacked? Crashed? How do I tell what happened?

Unresponsive server. Hacked? Crashed? How do I tell what happened?

Hi, sorry if I'm a little "green,"

I've got an Amazon EC2 linux server. My website stopped responding. I tried to SSH in and also did not get a response. Amazon EC2 Management Console said it was still running fine. I could ping it, but web and ssh were not responding. I rebooted the instance and it came back up working fine.

I'm trying to look through the logs and I'm seeing nothing that helps. Amazon shows a single spike in disk read/write at 7am. My httpd access log showsa stop in file requests at 7am, but domain requests continued. I checked /var/log/secure and /var/log/messages and both don't have anything from 7am until I rebooted 3 hours later. It does show a ton of ssh failed attempts that stopped around 5am.

Is there somewhere else I should look? Is there a change I need to make in logging?
